The IB MYP — A Foundation for Young People Ready for the World

Middle school is the critical transition from childhood to young adulthood — a golden period when academic foundations, bilingual ability, and self-awareness grow fastest. At SIBS, we place the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) at the core of learning, enriched by China's National Curriculum and the UK Cambridge curriculum, walking alongside every student as they move confidently toward high school and world-class universities.

Why SIBS Middle School

Founded in 2000 on the banks of the Wenyu River in Beijing's Shunyi Central Villa District, Springboard International Bilingual School (SIBS) is a non-profit international school serving students aged 2–18, from kindergarten through high school. As an independent school committed to "no branch campuses, no loans, and no outside financing," we devote all our energy to the genuine growth of every child.

The Middle School currently serves Grades 6–8. While staying true to our bilingual international education identity, we adopt the IB MYP framework, integrate China's National Curriculum with the UK Cambridge curriculum, and weave in distinctive courses on Chinese history and culture.

Middle school is a vital bridging stage of adolescence. Our classrooms build solid foundations in both Chinese and English, while integrated science and the AI Future School technology curriculum spark scientific inquiry and hands-on problem solving. Arts courses also give students considering an arts pathway their first grounding in visual art, drama, and music.

"Education is not an arms race — it is patient waiting for flowers to bloom."
— Principal Zhang Aijun · SIBS Sixth Five-Year Plan

Pillars of an Integrated Chinese–Western Curriculum

Built on the IB MYP framework and layered with preparatory courses for the world's leading university pathways, the curriculum lets every child find their own direction.

  • IB MYP Bilingual Inquiry: A globally recognized transition program for ages 11–16, concept-driven and transdisciplinary, emphasizing "service and action" while developing critical thinking and a global outlook.
  • National Curriculum + Cambridge Curriculum: Blending China's National Curriculum with the UK Cambridge curriculum keeps students rooted in Chinese culture while advancing steadily in both languages.
  • Integrated Science & AI Technology Courses: Full exposure to physics, chemistry, and biology with equal emphasis on laboratory skills and scientific inquiry, reinforced by AI Future School technology courses that build a strong foundation for IB / AP / A-Level science in high school.
  • Arts Education: Visual art, drama, and music run throughout the middle years, nurturing creativity for students drawn to the arts and building a bridge to arts pathways in high school.
  • AI Future School: 2025 marked SIBS's entry into the "AI Future School" era — the TECH HUB Innovation Center is equipped with an AI laboratory, robotics, 3D printing, an automotive workshop, and other cutting-edge facilities.
  • Early University & Career Guidance: Guidance begins in Grade 6, with dedicated courses from Grade 8, working back from students' goals to prepare them for diverse high school pathways.

The MYP Framework · Eight Subject Groups

Guided by the official IB MYP framework, SIBS Middle School uses the eight subject groups as the vehicle for learning, driven by teaching approaches, key concepts, global contexts, and approaches to learning; service, action, and projects connect learning to the real world, ultimately pointing toward the IB Learner Profile and international-mindedness.

Within the official MYP framework, SIBS integrates the strengths of China's National Curriculum and the UK Cambridge curriculum, and empowers science and design subjects with AI Future School technology courses — making the Chinese–Western blend real in every classroom.

  • Building Connected Knowledge: The eight subject groups are not taught in isolation but linked through key concepts and global contexts, helping students understand "why knowledge matters" rather than memorizing mechanically.
  • Mastering Lifelong Learning Skills: Systematic development of communication, social, self-management, research, and thinking skills teaches students "how to learn," preparing them for the challenges of high school and beyond.
  • Connecting to the Real World: Through service, action, community projects, and the personal project, students turn classroom learning into the ability to solve real problems, building responsibility and care for society.
  • Shaping the Whole Person: With the IB Learner Profile as the ultimate goal, students develop inquiry, critical thinking, open-mindedness, and compassion — becoming internationally minded global citizens.

An Innovation DNA for the AI Era

From the opening of the Innovation Center in 2024 to the "AI Future School" launch year of 2025, SIBS has turned cutting-edge technology into an everyday partner in the classroom.

  • 2024 · TECH HUB Innovation Center: The new innovation building opened with an AI computer laboratory, robotics laboratory, digital design & manufacturing, a super automotive workshop, and a black-box theater.
  • 2025 · AI Future School Launch Year: With the Sixth Five-Year Plan underway, courses in artificial intelligence, robotics, drones, autonomous driving, 3D printing, and wood/metalworking are now woven into everyday teaching.
  • K–12 Stepped Innovation Pathways: Robotics teams, an annual technology festival, and leading technology companies on campus make innovation tangible and creatable for every student.
  • Future-Ready · Cultivating People AI Cannot Replace: With critical thinking, creativity, and lifelong learning as core competencies, we build the foundation for students' next 20–30 years.

Exceptional Faculty & International Accreditation

We treat "teachers" as the school's most competitive label, retaining outstanding educators through top salaries and professional growth systems.

  • Highly Qualified Chinese & International Faculty: Over 80% of teachers hold a master's degree or higher (including doctorates), and over 90% have more than five years of international school teaching experience.
  • IB World School: Fully authorized by the IBO for PYP + MYP + DP — a continuous full-program authorization held by only a small number of schools in Beijing.
  • Multiple International Accreditations: Cambridge CAIE, US Cognia, EARCOS, AP (College Board), BTEC Arts & Sports, and membership of the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award.
